The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan on Thursday adjourned the hearing of a suo moto case against conversion of Markaz-e-Quran o Sunna Islamic and Research Centre Karachi into Cinepax cinema hall due to the absence of cinema’s counsel.
The division bench of the apex court was hearing the case at its Karachi registry but it was told that counsel of cinema owner was not present.
The complainant, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, requested the court to adjourn the case to nearest date as it was an important matter.
The court adjourned the hearing for next week.
Earlier, the court had converted a letter written to it by Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Chief Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman into a constitution petition and sought comments from the authorities concerned.
Markaz-e-Islami was founded by former Sindh governor SM Abbasi in 1982 but it was converted into a cinema hall namely Cinepax in 2013.
The centre was made for promotion of Islamic activities but after the conversion into cinema hall, now movies are being shown there.
The dome of the Markaz-e-Islami’s building is still present there.
