An Intermediate student lost his life in alleged firing by the police during a late night quarrel over cell phone snatching.
The victim Abrar, aged 28, had reportedly posted an ad on a website to sell his mobile phone. A customer, identified as 35-year-old Dilnawaz, came to meet him at Sindh Muslim Society late Sunday night and snatched Abrar’s android mobile.
“The man (Dilnawaz) was in his car, he took mobile from Abrar and sped away without payment. Seeing his fleeing, Abrar clung to the car to overpower him, when a patrolling party of police opened fire on them. The bullet hit Abrar and he died on the spot,” eyewitnesses and heirs of the deceased said.
Dilnawaz was injured in the firing.
However, the area police denied any firing during the standoff. The SHO said the incident is being investigated, adding that the statement of the accused has been recorded.
There is no clue about whereabouts of the policemen who opened fire.
Meanwhile, the police investigation revealed that Dilnawaz’s vehicle was bearing a fake number plate and that he has a criminal record.
The body and injured were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) for medico-legal formalities while further investigations are underway.
