Twenty long years after Spice Girls’ Wannabe first released, the song is being used as a peppy medium to drive home the simple message of gender equality.
This time, women from across the world have joined hands with United Nations’ The Global Goals initiative for their #WhatIReallyReallyWantmovement.
Featuring Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez and London-based R&B trio, M.O, the song throws light on various issues concerning women of the world even today–everything ranging from violence against women to equal pay for equal work to girl child education.
The video has been launched by Project Everyone, a campaign that aims to eradicate poverty, injustice and fight climate change, and is backed by big names like director-producer Richard Curtis, actors Freida Pinto and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
According to The Guardian, the video will start running in movie theatres internationally, starting this July.
“This is about modern day girl power,” said MJ Delaney, who directed the film. “The Spice Girls were about a group of different women joining together and being stronger through that bond. These differences are what we want to celebrate in this film, while showing there are some universal things that all girls, everywhere, really, really want.”
She expressed her support on Twitter through this tweet:
