Senators express concern over not empowering LB representatives

The senators expressed concern over not empowering the local bodies’ elected representatives in Sindh and Punjab and said that approximately seven months have passed of completing the local bodies’ polls but these are not being empowered.

Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi said that the representatives have not been empowered after approximately seven months have passed and they are waiting for it.

He said that some 96 councilors and Nazims were summoned on Tuesday for oath-taking but they were returned after four hours without an interview, adding that even the mayor of Karachi is not being empowered.

“The mayor of London is given media coverage in Pakistan as he is a Pakistani and Muslim. The mayor of Karachi is also Pakistani and Muslim but he is not given constitutional powers,” he said.

Senator Aurangzeb said that our brothers who are working abroad are not being paid any attention. He said that the income of Pakistani consulate is high and its building should be extended. He added that this process should speed up because majority of the Pakistanis do not even know the procedure of renewal of CNIC and passport for which they have to face a lot of problems. He stressed the need to save people from standing in long queues.

Senator Chaudhry Tanveer Khan said that there are many problems in PIMS Hospital Islamabad and patients are facing severe problems owing to the negligence of administration and civic agency, adding that the cleanliness is poor.

Senator Abdul Qayyum demanded to focus on the matter of assassination of a cardiologist Dr Shahid at PIMS who was a cardiologist of international fame.

Senator Javed Abbasi pointed out the worsen traffic system at Bhara Kohu, a suburb of the federal capital.

Senator Najma Bibi admired the annual budget for fiscal year 2016-17 and said that the existing government of Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz has initiated measures for the development of economy and steps are being initiated for the betterment of agriculture and economy. However, there is a need to decrease the ratio of tax on fertiliser, she said.
