LAHORE – The provision of new gas connections for industrial and commercial use would halt for one or two months, sources in Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) told Pakistan Today on Monday. Prime Minister Yosaf Raza Gilani on Sunday said that provision of new gas connections would halt for the next six months. The SNGPL officials said that the government was not in a mood of stopping gas connections for domestic use, as it could result in the loss of public support for the government in the general elections.
However, no instructions were given to the SNGPL or Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) about totally halting the gas connections’ provision but most probably only industrial and commercial connections would be stopped, said SNGPL sources. “It is a democratic government and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) will lose fame if it stops domestic connections.
It is the reason that in the last six months, it has given gas connection in a large number of villages and remote areas,” said a source adding that the recent announcement was made to give an impression that the priorities for gas connections have ended. No political party could take the risk of stopping domestic connections, said sources.
An official of the company said that in the past the connections were stopped temporarily only during the winter season when there was an increased demand for gas. The gas connections halted for only one month and only industrial connections were stopped, he added. “We don’t even emphasize on stopping new domestic connections in winter, as we have a lot of pressure from the politicians and stopping domestic connection means end of vote bank,” said a senior official of SNGPL.
He said the SNGPL had to oblige the politicians for giving gas connections and it gave birth to the culture of the ‘priority list’. “It was the start of problem in SNGPL, as priority culture deprived the rightful user and gas connection was given on priority basis. A large number of consumers, who don’t have any reference have to wait for years for getting gas connection while people on the priority list were given connections,” he said. Former SNGPL managing director Rasheed Lone had taken the control of the priority list and the merit was being ignored, said an official.
