Five members of a family doused with acid

Two unknown suspects doused five members of a family, including two children with acid, in Multan’s Shujjabad area on Friday.

The family members were asleep when the unidentified men barged into the home and threw acid on them.

30-year-old Shahid, his 20-year-old wife Iqra, two daughters including Alishba (2), Zara (1) and another relative were severely injured in the incident while the attackers managed to escape from the scene. The victims were rushed to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Shujjabad for medical attendance.

According to doctors, Iqra’s body has suffered 70% burns. Later, she was moved to Multan’s Nishtaq Hospital in critical condition.

Police have registered FIR of the acid attack and investigating the incident.

Acid attacks are common in Pakistan and neighboring India. The majority of acid attack victims are women, which are mostly targeted over domestic or land disputes, a rejected marriage proposal, a research report said.

According to the Human Rights Commission, 55 acid attacks took place in Pakistan last year. To date, only 17 arrests have been made.
