Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani on Tuesday directed the federal government to make legislation for moon sighting in order to resolve the issue of dual start of Ramzan and celebration of Eid in the country.

“There should be a specific law to deal with the issue of moon sighting so that conflict can be eliminated forever through a legal cover,” the Senate chairman said.

Rabbani added it was beyond understanding why Ramzan commenced in Pakistan and India on Tuesday while it commenced in rest of the countries on Monday.

Rabbani was in conversation with Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Yousaf during the proceedings of the house.

Yousaf informed the House that Ministry of Religious Affairs has already drafted a bill to regularise the issue of moon sighting in the country however, the ministry of law raised objections over the proposed law.

“According to the ministry of law, moon sighting is a provincial matter and the federal government cannot legislate on the issue,” Yousaf said.

The minister added that resolutions are required from at least two provincial assemblies for enabling the federal government to draft legislation in this regard.

Rabbani also directed the members of PTI to make ensure the passing of a resolution from the KP assembly empowering the federal government for making legislation on moon sighting.
