The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday adjourned till June 20 the hearing of a reference filed by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Aleem Khan.
The speaker is seeking action against Aleem under the law on submitting fake affidavits regarding alleged rigging in the NA-122 by-election.
A four-member bench, headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (r) Raza Muhamamd Khan, during the proceedings observed that further proceedings and a decision could not be announced as the matter was sub-judice.
On May 4, Lahore High Court Justice Ayesha A Malik had suspended the proceedings before the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against PTI’s Aleem Khan.
The court had issued a stay order on petition of Aleem Khan and sought a reply from the ECP.
According to the reference, Aleem Khan had submitted affidavits claiming that around 2,000 votes were transferred and 24,000 votes were registered in NA-122 before by-polls without consultation of voters.
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq demanded action against Aleem Khan under the provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code. According to the rules of ECP, if the allegations are proven against the PTI leader, then Aleem Khan can face three to five years imprisonment.
