The cash-strapped and chronically-overstaffed Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has given extension of one more year to about 500 contact employees.

A KMC release, quoting Karachi administrator Laeeq Ahmed, said this extension was given on humanitarian grounds and saving these people from joblessness.

However, the citizens complained that the KMC had proved itself as a white elephant for Karachiites. This hugely overstaffed organisation has failed to resolve even basic civic problems of the citizens. Major chunk of the funds of Karachi is spent on the salaries of these employees, many of them practically do nothing except their party work.

Recently, Minister for Local Government Jam Khan Shoro on the floor of the Sindh Assembly had complained that the majority of surplus staff of the KMC and KWSB comprised of political activists of his rival party who, he said, were recruited on the basis of their party affiliation.
