Khattak performs groundbreaking of University of Swat

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak has said that without education neither a civilised and peaceful society can be ensured nor the dream of progress and prosperity in the society can be translated into reality.

He said that only knowledge and training can curb ignorance, unemployment and extremism from the country.

He was addressing at the groundbreaking ceremony of the 1st phase of the University of Swat at Charbag , Swat on Sunday. Provincial minister Mehmood Khan, Special Assistants to CM Dr Amjad Ali, Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani, Advisor Abdul Haq, elected members of the parliament, professors, students and elders of the area attended the ceremony.

Paliamentaey Secretary Dr Haider Ali and VC of the University Prof Bakht Jaean also spoke on the occasion.

The VC highlighted contribution of the university and their future plans. It is worth mentioning that Rs 2.5 billion will be incurred on the construction of the first phase of the university and it will be completed in a period of one and a half years. Earlier the chief minister laid the foundation stone of the Tehsil Complex building at Kabal Tehsil. USAID will provide Rs 255.011 million for the construction of the complex .The project will be completed in one year.

The chief minister, while addressing the foundation stone laying ceremony of the University of Swat, said that the university will be a milestone for the development of the residents of Swat and bright future for the new generations of the area. He remarked that it will provide opportunities for women to pursue higher education at their doorsteps. The CM said that the people of Swat especially, and people of Shangla, Buner and Malakand Division generally, will benefit from the establishment of the university. He paid tribute to the people of Swat for facing the unfavourable conditions created due to extremism and disasters in the recent past boldly and not losing courage.

“Even the worst situation could not hurt their morale,” he remarked.

Referring to the steps of the provincial government for the improvement of education, the CM said that the ratio of teachers’ attendance had increased in schools due introduction of monitoring system there. He said that English has been introduced from class one in public schools to provide opportunities to the poor youth to achieve high status in the society. The CM explained that six different universities are being established in the province to produce skilled man power to overcome unemployment.

The chief minister said technical centers have been linked to the industries to provide skilled workers required by the industrial sector and to facilitate employment opportunities in the province.

Similarly he said that Rs 500 million under Chief Minister’s Education Endowment Fund had been allocated to encourage research in the province. He added that Rs 300 million had also been earmarked for education endowment funds to promote quality education. He said that University Model Act had been tabled in the provincial assembly to improve quality of education.

Mentioning initiatives for the development of the area, the CM said, the government had planned establishment of Swat Expressway which he hoped would play a dynamic role in the development of the entire Malakand Division.

“The project is planned to link the area to Pakistan-China Economic Corridor project,” the chief minister said and added that the government is designing to establish an industrial park in Chakdara to exploit mineral and agricultural potential of the area and to create employment opportunities in the division.

The CM informed that the provincial government has taken notice of the imposition of income taxes in Malakand Division. He said that the provincial government had categorically asked the federal government for its withdrawal as it was injustice with the people living in areas with natural and manmade disasters. He added that the provincial government had suggested to the federal government duty free import of vehicles to curb the menace of the issue of non custom paid vehicles in Malakand division.

The chief minister, apart from announcing establishment of a bio diversity park in Kalam for the University of Swat, also approved an IT Park to provide research and employment opportunities to the youth of the area. He also assured allocation of funds for provision of water and establishment of a hostel of international standard at the University of Swat.
