Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has approved the expansion project of the Lahore airport.
The Allama Iqbal International Airport is the second largest airport in the country and serves a large number of travellers. The expansion of the airport will increase the number of international flights and the number of passengers at the airport. In order to cater to a large number of travellers, the size of the building would also be increased.
The new design of the airport is said to have been inspired from the national flower jasmine.
According to sources, the contract for the construction has been handed over to the private Spanish firm Tepsa International.
The firm has reportedly sought two and a half years for completion of the project. The foreign firm has previously worked on construction of an airport in Madrid and on the spectacularly looking airport in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo.
Currently only seven planes can be parked in the hangar of the airport while after the completion of the project, 22 aeroplanes will easily be parked at the main terminal.
The current building of the airport will not be demolished but there will be expansion in the northern, southern and eastern sides of the airport. The expansion cannot take in the western side due to the runway.
The current parking area will be removed and arrival and departure lounges will be constructed over there. The round park situated near the airport will be used as the new parking area.

one does experience long queues while approaching the main terminal building at the security check points essentially because entry points for the departing passengers drop lane and the parking area are side by side. i hope that the planners have taken note of this situation and that approaches and entry points to these areas are suitably located to avoid pile ups which cause anxiety particularly for the departing passengers as they may miss their flights.
