World No.1 women’s doubles pairing of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis produced a sterling late show against Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova in the final on Sunday to clinch the Rome Masters title.

Sania and her Swiss partner won beat the Russian duo 6-1, 6(5)-7, 10-3 for their first title in the Italian capital.

The top seeds, who had defeated Irina-Camelia Begu and Monica Niculescu on Saturday to move into their third consecutive clay-court final, made a blistering start to win the first set in 24 minutes.

The second set seemed to be going the same way as the Indo-Swiss pair opened a 5-3 lead.

However, the Russian team were not ready to throw in the towel just yet and fought back brilliantly to take the second set in tie-breaker.

Sania-Hingis regrouped well and won the decider in 12 minutes for their 14th title as a pair, and their fifth of the season.

This Sania and Hingis’ first title since the end of their incredible 41-match winning streak in Doha in February.
