At least five factory workers died in Korangi Industrial Area while cleaning a chemical tank at a factory on Sunday.
Landhi Superintendent Police (SP) Afnan Amin said that four workers got into the chemical tank to clean it followed by three more men who attempted to rescue them. The incident occurred at a factory which manufactures polythene bags. The five men who were brought dead to JPMC died as a result of inhaling toxic fumes, while one other worker was in stable condition at the hospital, Head of JPMC’s Emergency Unit Dr Seemin Jamali confirmed. The factory has been cordoned off by police.
CM SEEKS REPORT FROM LABOUR DEPARTMENT
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah expressed profound grief on the death of five labourers in a factory of Korangi Industrial area and directed the secretary labour to submit a detailed report within three days with recommendation of action against the factory management.
The chief minister raised a few questions that how the labourers were working on holiday (Sunday), what kind of work they were engaged for, whether or not they were covered under social security and what safety measure the factory management had taken to protect life of the workers working there.
The chief minister directed the labour department to give him report about the questions he raised and the action taken by the department and suggest action by the chief minister, if necessary.
