The lawmakers in the National Assembly while terming interest-based system against the spirit of constitution on Tuesday called for taking concrete steps to eliminate interest from the country.
Speaking on a motion that the House may discuss the steps being taken by the government to eliminate interest from the country, Naeema Kishwer Khan said it was clearly written in the constitution that no law would be constituted against Islam and Sunnah in the country.
She said the Muttahida Majlis Amal (MMA) government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa introduced Islamic banking in the province and provided interest-free loans to the people.
She said the interest-based system was also being phased out in the western countries. She said that the House had also unanimously passed a resolution to take steps for eliminating interest-based system in the country. Shah Jee Gul Afridi said the whole Muslim ummah was passing through a critical phase and today their miseries were due to this interest-based system.
He also suggested that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) should give a complete policy to end interest-based system in the country. Maulana Amir Zaman said that over 90 per cent population of the country was Muslim and they were also demanding end to the interest-based system. Maulana Gohar Shah and Maulana Qamaruddin also termed interest-based system against Islam and Sunnah and called for practical steps to eliminate this system.
