In the planned reboot of The Mummy franchise, Russell Crowe has confirmed he will be playing iconic character Dr. Jekyll.
Talking to media, the Australian actor said: “Yeah, I’m going to do it. I’m going to play Dr. Henry Jekyll, Fellow of the Royal Society. It’s very interesting, what they’re going to do with that stuff. I’ve had a couple of chats about it with the director.”
Co-writer of the recent Star Trek films Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are heading the venture with the former directing Cruise and Peaky Blinders actor Annabelle Wallis in The Mummy.
“Sure, I would imagine he’s scared right about now. but when we started talking about this idea, there were a few things I put up in the air and he picked up on them. Those kinds of creative collaborative conversations, if they’re explosive like that from the first time you start talking, you’re actually in a really good place,” Russell added.
The Mummy will be the first of a series of rebooted monster movies that will unite classic creatures in an Avengers-style mash-up that’ll include Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, and The Bride of Frankenstein.
“How they’ve pulled all of this stuff forward into a contemporary world and how they’re building it out from there – and how all of the different characters interweave into each other’s stories – it’s fantastic,” reassured Crowe.
The Australian actor joins the likes of John Barrymore, Frederic March and Spencer Tracy in playing the character.
The Mummy will be released on 9 June 2017.
