NA body seeks reports on alleged rape of disabled girl in PIMS, deaths in Layyah and Thar

The National Assembly Standing Committee for Human Rights has taken serious notice of the alleged rape of a disabled girl and her subsequent burning, deaths of people by consuming poisonous sweet in Layyah as well as deaths in Thar due to drought and sought from the concerned chief secretaries, commissioners and deputy commissioners at its next meeting.

Meeting of the committee was held on Monday under the chairmanship of Babar Nawaz Shan. It was attended by members of the standing committee, Vice Chancellor PIMS Dr Javed Akram and senior officials of Human Rights Commission and Ministry for Human Rights.

The PIMS administration informed the meeting that apparently attempts were made to rape the girl but the accused could not succeed. Dr Javed Akram said that full facts of the case would be come to surface after DNA report. He said DNA tests of accused Kirisn Kumar have been sent abroad and report is expected this week. He said all the staff on duty at the ICU has been suspended.

The committee showed keen interest in this issue. The committee decided to pend the issue till the finalization of medical report. The committee also decided to take the issues of 31 causalities by poisoned sweet in District Layyah, fifteen years old innocent girl rape and murder by fire burning in Abbotabad and the lady who was killed in the name of honor killing by her brother in Karachi in the upcoming Committee meeting.

The National Commission on the Status of Women (Amendment) Bill, 2016” moved by Ms. Saman Sultana Jafri, MNA was deferred on the request of Ministry of Human Rights.

Officials of the Human Rights Commission briefed the meeting about the deaths in Thar district of Sindh. They said that the population of Thar was over 1.3 million, most of it Hindus. They said that Sindh government has approved 760 plants to overcome water shortage. In addition Pak-Oasis has set up 420 ROs plants but 70 of them have stopped functioning due to non maintenance. In addition to the ROs plants were set up on political basis rather than population.

They said 80% of the population lacks basic food. There are only 14 ambulances for a population of 13lakhs, 141 posts of doctors are vacant in local hospitals as doctors are not ready to work there due to lack of incentives.

The committee also demanded action against accused in deaths of people in Layyah.
