Supreme Court’s Justice Ejaz Afzal has remarked that education is expensive in the country and only the rich can afford to provide education to their children, adding that the government should take steps for providing educational opportunities to the children of the poor.

He expressed these views while presiding over a 2-member bench of the apex court during the hearing of Auqaf Department’s land occupation case Tuesday.

The petitioner Muzaffar Hussain told the court that people have occupied land measuring several acres in Muzaffargarh and Rajan Pur and the fees are being charged in thousands by the Auqaf-run schools and that only the children of well-off people can study in these schools. Dacoits and gangsters are living on the land of Auqaf department and the department does not tell the correct price of its land, he claimed.

The additional attorney general Punjab told the court that the committee has been constituted under the commissioner for overseeing the auction of land.

The court while seeking report on occupation and auction of land of the Auqaf department and details of its accounts, adjourned the hearing of the case till June 2.
