Historical sites are recognition of nations: Sharmila

Special Assistant to CM Sindh for Culture and Tourism Sharmila Faruqui has said that archeological and heritage sites are recognition of nations. It is our sole responsibility as well as duty to protect our monuments and archeological sites. She said this in a statement issued on Sunday on the eve of International Day for Monuments and Sites which is celebrated on 18th April every year since 1983. This year’s theme is ‘The heritage of Sports’.

“Fortunately, Pakistan is highly rich in historical monuments and heritage sites, especially Indus valley and Gandhara civilisation ruins. World is making billions of dollars by tourism by conserving their historical monuments to attract the tourists. The current situation of Pakistan economy does not allow us to spend as much amount on our sites as other nations did,” she said.

She added that the aim of International Day for Monuments and Sites was to encourage local communities and individuals throughout the world to consider the importance of cultural heritage in their lives, identities and communities, and to promote awareness of its diversity and vulnerability and the efforts required to protect and conserve it.

She informed that the Sindh tourism and antiquities department was going to celebrate “World Monuments & Heritage Sites Day” by holding solo painting exhibition “Colours of Heritage” by Mushtaque Ali Lashari made with real tea and coffee, focusing the heritage building of Karachi at Frere Hall.
