LAHORE – Hamza Mawaz Khan and Taimur Ali Malik steered Guard Group to April Polo Cup title victory here at the Lahore Polo Club ground on Sunday. Dewa’s Own edged aside Pony Express to notch third place in the tournament.
Former President Lahore Polo Club Ishaq Khan Khakwani was the chief guest and distributed the prizes among the winners. In pleasant but a bit hot weather, Guard Group’s main striker Hamza hit six goals while two came from Malik. PESSI got six on board and lost by two-and-a-half with winners also having the advantage. The star from PESSI was Ahmed Ali Tiwana who scored five of the six goals with one coming from Omar Asjad Malhi.
In the other subsidiary match, Dewa’s half-a-goal advantage decided the win in their favour after both the teams – with other being Pony Express – scored seven goals each. It was Zain Khan Khakwani and Saqib Khan Khakwani who produced back to back goals in the dying stages of the match to undo the supremacy of Hussain Iftikhar, Shiraz Qureshi and Agha Murtaza Ali Khan, who shared seven goals in between them.
Saqib shared four goals, Zain two and Emran Akhtar one to come even with their rivals and post equaliser, the half-a-goal advantage came into play and Dewa’s Own turned out to be the winners. The umpires for the matches were Hassan Ali Farrukh, Feroze Gulzar and Jawad Jamil Malik.
