The gathering storm

Climate change needed

The PMLN should have realized by now that in politics, offence might not always be the best form of defence. Through their provocative and indiscriminately fired salvos PMLN ministers have made it difficult for even their more peaceable opponents to end the confrontation. By peremptorily refusing to allow the PTI to hold a rally anywhere in Islamabad – while meekly reconciling with the fait accompli performed by those protesting Qadri’s hanging – Ch Nisar threw a gauntlet to Imran Khan who was left with no choice but to pick it up. The abrasive remarks against the PPP Co-chairman, the leader of the opposition in Senate and leader of the opposition in National Assembly have further complicated matters.

The PMLN has provided the opposition an opportunity to start what can turn out to be an election campaign two years ahead of the schedule.  In the battle for the crown, it is the incumbent who stands to lose everything while the challengers simply lose a battle.  The Prime Minister’s visit to London – which has been otherwise described as a visit for medical consultation – is likely to lead to talks with Zardari. In politics, there is always a quid for every quo, and one wonders what Sharif has up his sleeves in case he meets Zardari. Few think Nawaz Sharif can order Asim Hussain to be freed.

With the absence of Zardari from the political scene and the lack of maturity on the part of Bilawal, PPP leaders in the field are gradually picking up confidence. It would be too much to expect that they would blindly carry out their chief’s directives. Zardari had already put the party into a quandary in June last year with his remarks against the army. Earlier this year when Zardari characterized the army chief’s decision regarding non-acceptance of extension as “premature” and stressed the “need for continuity in the military leadership”, the party had declined not to own the statement.  The gathering storm can only be averted if the PMLN reaches an understanding with opposition on a fair probe

  1. The rulers know the people of Pakistan are lame duck masses who love to dance like children to the drum beat of empty promises and emotional tantrums; they have consistently done so by electing them at each and every election despite looting, corruption, misuse of power and shoddy governance. So why shouldn’t they make hay while the sun is shinning; loot to their hearts delight with complete impunity. Problem is not the corrupt status quo, the problem is the zombie electorate.

  2. Spot on bro. If anyone is to blame it is the electorates.Even rigging in elections is due to the indifference of them.Otherwise PMLN would have been shown the door by now.

  3. I knew my comments would not be published so far as this Jiyala is behing the desk. But I wonder why always write something against the most honorable person of Pakistan – that Mr 10% ? Is this OK Jiyala ?
