400,000 tons of wheat to be procured

GUJRANWALA – The Food Department will procure 400,000 metric tons of wheat this year and the provincial government’s procurement guidelines policy implemented in the province, said Punjab Food Director Najam Ahmad Shah on Saturday.
While presiding over a meeting of the district coordination officers (DCOs) and officers of the food department from all the six districts of the Gujranwala division, the Punjab food director warned there was no room for negligence or corruption at any level.
The director said wheat procurement would be started from 20th April at the rate of Rs 950 per 40 kilograms and wheat bags would be delivered to the farmers from 18th April. He further said the DCOs had been authorised to improve procurement process according to their conditions and added that they would monitor and report day-to-day proceedings in this regard.
It was briefed at the meeting that 193,000 metric tons of wheat would be procured from Gujranwala district, 72,000 tons from Sialkot district, 36,000 tons from Narowal district, 25,000 tons from Gujrat district and 53,000 metric tons from Mandi Baha-ud-Din district. The participants of the meeting were also told that a storage plan had been prepared for the safety of the procured wheat.
DACOIT GANG BUSTED: The city police have busted a dacoit gang and arrested its five members, including the ringleader. Superintendent of Police (SP) Rai Ijaz Ahmad said Tahir Abbas and his four accomplices were involved in heinous robberies and could not be traced out for months.
He added the police, on a tip off, succeeded in arresting Tahir Abbas (ringleader), Ali Safian, Zeeshan, Munawar Hayat and Abdul Rasheed, and recovering three snatched motorcycles, cash, 20 cell phones and illicit weapons from them.
