Singer Lily Allen accepted damages Thursday from the publisher of a football magazine about a fake interview in which she was quoted making offensive remarks about David and Victoria Beckham.
The High Court in London was told that the French magazine ‘So Foot’ claimed in its May 2009 issue that Allen also made remarks about British singer Cheryl Cole and her then husband, Chelsea footballer Ashley Cole.
The singer’s lawyer Mark Thomson said the publishers accepted “that the claimant did not make the statements attributed to her in their magazine and that, contrary to their previous understanding of the position, no interview in fact took place with the claimant.” “They also apologized and paid Allen for the damages and legal costs,” Thomson added.
Richard Dugdale, a lawyer representing the magazine, said it offered “sincere apologies to the claimant for the damage, as well as the embarrassment caused to her by the publication of the article.”
