Majority of the city’s main roads lack traffic signboards and proper road markings including speed limits, lane marking, zebra crossing and stop lines causing accidents and traffic congestions at a massive level in the metropolis.
It has been observed that almost all city roads lack proper road marking which is important for drivers to run their vehicles as per the traffic laws and to ensure smooth flow of traffic in the city. Due to lack of these markings, road accidents have become the order of the day, as almost all roads miss zebra crossing which is the pedestrians’ right.
The city’s roads that lack proper markings include Shahra-e-Kamal Ataturk, Burns Road, Empress Market Road, MA Jinnah Road, University Road and Tariq Road.
Karachi Traffic Police DIG Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh told PPI that they had written an official letter to the Karachi commissioner and requested him to direct KMC’s department concerned to re-paint the roads on urgent basis. He said they had also mentioned in the letter that due to lack of proper road markings like zebra crossing etc causing lot of inconvenience for the pedestrians as well as other road users. The DIG said that due to lack of signboards alongside main roads, negligent drivers were freely violating traffic law by over speeding their vehicles resulting in large number of accidents in the city.
