The National Assembly was informed on Thursday that total external debt of the country stands at $53.4 billion.
During the session, Parliamentary Secretary for Finance Rana Muhammad Afzal Khan said that when the incumbent government took over, there was an external debts of $48.1 billion and that the debt increased by $5.3 billion during the last three years.
Rana Muhammad Afzal said that through prudent policies, the government had succeeded in reducing fiscal deficit from 8.4 per cent to 5.5 per cent and said that it will be reduced further to 5.1 per cent this year.
