The nearly decade-long career of Shaktimaan, a stately white horse with the Uttarakhand police, came to an unfortunate end after it was attacked and severely injured in the leg allegedly by BJP members protesting against the Harish Rawat government in Dehradun on Monday.
Vets attending to the horse said its leg will have to be amputated. The protesters, led by BJP MLA from Mussoorie Ganesh Joshi, first allegedly attacked a police team near the state assembly building while demonstrating against what they said were the failures of the Congress government in the state.

Soon, for reasons best known to them, they targeted the horse and rained several blows on itslegs, bringing down the bleeding 13-year-old animal to the ground as it writhed in pain, unable to move.”Shaktimaan has suffered multiple fractures, including a compound fracture, and was been taken to a veterinary hospital.
There is virtually no hope for him to do police work in future. Now, our aim is to ensure a painless life for him. The leg will have to be amputated and we are just hoping that he recovers,” SSP Sadanand Date told TOI.
Shaktimaan was purchased by the Uttarakhand police for Rs 95,000 in 2007 and made a part of the Dehradun team. He faced several tough situations and protests in his career. His rider for years has been Ravindra Singh and his helper Shivnath Goswami. Cops lodged an FIR under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle) against Joshi and unidentified persons present at the spot.
