Pakistan Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique has written letters to chief executives of all provinces to release funds for the conversion of un-manned level crossings into manned level crossings to reduce accidents on tracks.

The minister for Railways on Monday told this to the Senate Standing Committee on Pakistan Railways in a meeting chaired by Senator Sardar Fateh Muhammad Muhammad Hassani at PR headquarters.

The meeting was briefed that only the Punjab govt had released Rs 555 million and that 95 per cent of the most dangerous unmanned level crossings had so far been made manned level crossings in the province.

The minister urged the other provincial governments to cooperate in this regard and join hands with the railways to protect the lives of people.

The committee was told that the new accident compensation policy had been introduced and now Rs 1 million would be given in case of casualty and Rs 300,000 in case of injury through postal insurance.

Regarding the theft of SANDAK rail track, the committee was told the track was laid by a company of the PR but it was completely owned and managed by the Ministry of Petroleum and the protection of the track was not the responsibility of railways.

The matter of the Royal Palm club was also discussed in the meeting but the committee chairman postponed it, saying the matter was sub judice.

The committee also took up the matter of illegal occupation of land by Business Trust Hospital (Shalimar Hospital). The PR officers gave a briefing regarding the steps taken by the PR on the issue.

The committee members Senator Hafiz Hamdullah, Senator Sardar Muhammad Azam Khan Musakhel, Senator Muhammad Zafrullah Khan Dhandla, Senator Taj Haider and Senator Samina Abid and Punjab Board of Revenue Senior Member Capt Zahid Saeed along with other officers were present on the occasion.

PR Chairman Secretary Parveen Agha, PR Chief Executive Javaid Anwar Boobak, Advisor Najam Pervaiz and other senior officers also attended the meeting.

KP GOVT CREATING HURDLES:

Federal Minister for Railways Khwaja Saad Rafique accused Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Government of creating hurdles in the way of building double-track railway lines in the province.

Speaking to media on Monday, the minister said that the federal government planned to build double track railway lines from Lahore to Torkham via Peshawar but the KP government was interfering in the project.

He added that no one can stop Pakistan from being developed if the management of the state institutions, labourers and politicians work together as one.

The railways minister said that he wants to set the department right, for which he is working double shifts without any charges. He added that the labourers will be paid for working overtime.
