The Islamabad District Administration has banned illegal sale of cigarettes in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) and warned shopkeepers that in case of violation they might face jail.
The decision has been taken in a bid to make the federal capital a smoke-free zone. Violators of the ban will be fined Rs 50,000 along with three days in prison.
The administration would issue licenses to more than 1,700 shopkeepers. At least 50 shop owners have acquired licenses in this regard.
Sale of imported cigarettes has been banned irrespective of any license issued by the administration.
