Dominik Paris kept himself in the hunt for a crystal globe with victory in Saturday’s FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup downhill race in Chamonix.
Italy’s Paris was a comfortable winner, finishing 0.35 seconds ahead of Steven Nyman to secure a first World Cup triumph since January 2015.
Beat Feuz (+0.39secs) completed the podium, while Paris’ countryman Peter Fill finished fifth to move within 26 points of downhill standings leader Aksel Lund Svindal.
With two races in the discipline to come – at Kvitfjell and St Moritz in March – and Svindal out for the remainder of the season, Fill appears the favourite to claim the downhill title.
However, Paris is up to fifth in the standings and now trails Fill by only 78 points.
France’s Adrien Theaux came home sixth on Saturday, leaving him 69 points behind Fill, while Kjetil Jansrud – another contender for downhill glory was well down the field in 21st.
Paris’ victory completed a triumphant day for Italy, following Nadia Fanchini’s success in the women’s downhill at La Thuile.
