The Lahore High Court on Friday sought assistance from the attorney general of Pakistan (AGP) and advocate general Punjab on a petition seeking directions to amend Article 175 of the Constitution for renaming the LHC as Punjab High Court.

Justice Shahid Waheed passed these orders while hearing a petition filed by Advocate Javed Rasheed Mehboobi.

Earlier, the petitioner-counsel, arguing before the court, submitted that the Sindh High Court and Balochistan High Court had been named after the respective provinces whereas the Lahore High Court and the Peshawar High Court had been named after the respective provincial capitals in Article 175 of the Constitution. He pleaded the court to issue directions for amending the Article 175 to rename the Lahore High Court as Punjab High Court and Peshawar High Court as KPK High Court.

He also requested the court to issue directions for transfer of control of federal courts to the respective high courts as per decisions of the apex court. He also asked the court to order implementation on the apex court’s orders regarding administration and financial autonomy of the sub-ordinate courts.

Upon this, the court observed that many important law points had been raised through the petition and it needed consideration. The court seeking assistance from the attorney general of Pakistan and advocate general Punjab adjourned the hearing for three weeks.
