Some 221 government houses have been allotted to the employees of the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT Police by relaxing rules for them.
According to official sources, employees of ICT Police were not entitled to the allotment of government accommodation in the federal capital as no such policy had has been communicated to Estate Office.
However, no proposal was under consideration to cancel allotment of 221 government houses to policemen, they added.
An Estate Office official, when contacted, also confirmed allotment of government accommodations to police employees through relaxation of rules. He, however, clarified that only officers of Islamabad Police were entitled for allotment of official accommodation.
The official said the number of government employees placed on the general waiting list for allotment of official residence had surged to over 20,000, who would get government accommodation on the basis of merit as well as seniority.
He said the number of federal government employees entitled for official accommodation were around 100,000 while the Estate Office could provide housing facility to less than one-fourth of them. This was the reason that accommodation was the biggest problem for government servants in the capital.
The present government, he said, has launched new housing schemes in Islamabad and other cities for providing houses/flats to the people on ownership basis. The Housing Ministry officials believed this would solve the accommodation issue to some extent, he added.
