Ittehad-e-Tanzeemat-e-Madaris Head Mufti Muneebur Rehman on Monday expressed reservations over the proposed legislation by the Sindh government for registration of religious seminaries (Madaris) in the province.

The Sindh government is reportedly planning to table a bill in the provincial assembly to allow only government-approved Friday sermons in all the mosques in an attempt to “maintain sectarian harmony” among different schools of thought.

Addressing religious scholars of Ittehad-e-Tanzeemat-e-Madaris, Mufti Muneeb said: “We are concerned by the progress regarding additional legislation pertaining to registration of Madaris by the Sindh government. The provincial government is taking the step without taking Ittehad-e-Tanzeemat-e-Madaris into confidence and is going to present the draft bill in the provincial assembly under Section 21 of the Societies Act which could affect the atmosphere of mutual trust.”

He said the government should not target Madaris rather it should introduce a collective education reforms policy and make all the religious schools part of it.

Meanwhile talking to a private TV channel, Sindh Chief Minister’s Adviser on Religious Affairs Abdul Qayyum Soomro said that the process of registration of Madaris had been completed by about 95 per cent.

He said a code was being finalised to curb hate speech and remarks made during sermons which hurt the sentiments of the followers of other sects.
