Taking serious notice of the situation in Tharparkar, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has constituted a two-member judicial commission to probe into overall situation in the district.
The chief minister said on Sunday that taking serious view of the situation in Tharparkar, the provincial government had taken practical measures for poverty alleviation in the district.
He said: “I have improved health service, up-graded BHUs, dispensaries and taluka hospitals by providing them equipments, and have doubled the budget of medicines. But the media reports say that infant deaths are on the rise which is disturbing for me.”
The CM directed Chief Secretary Siddique Memon to constitute a judicial commission under justice (r) Ghulam Sarwar Korai and retired district & session judge Arjun Ram as its member to probe the overall situation prevailing in Tharparkar.
The commission would probe into the deaths of children, impact of government measure taken so far and suggest further requirements, if any, and also point out any shortfall in the implementation of government efforts/policy within 15 days. The commission would start its work from today to complete the probe within the stipulated time.
TWO MORE CHILDREN DIE IN THAR
Starvation coupled with several diseases continues to haunt residents of Thar as two more children breathed their last on Sunday in the famine-hit region of Sindh. The death toll has risen to 127 in two months.
Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto had constituted a committee last month comprising Information Adviser Moula Bux Chandio and Food Minister Nasir Shah to look into the situation in Thar. The two-member team was also expected to visit the region and submit a report to the PPP chairman. According to media reports, hospitals in Thar are facing a shortage of doctors while around 215 dispensaries remain non-functional in the remote villages of Thar region.
Deaths in Tharparkar are nothing new. Forming a commission and committees is like draging the matter or even sweeping under tha carpet. "Thar is echoing in Washington" says CM Sind and what they know in Washington is that people in that part of Sind are dying of starvation and lack of facilities. Form commission but give them food and medicines before that.
