Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani on Monday said that various martial law regimes, particularly that of General Ziaul Haq, made conscious efforts to change the curriculum in Pakistan to mislead the Pakistani youth away from the path of democracy, roots of federation and to denounce the multi-ethnic structure in the country.
There was a criminal attempt to tarnish and distort the history of our country thus closing the chapter of the struggle made by our great political heroes in the past, said Rabbani in his inaugural address in the ‘opening ceremony of Internship programme of Senate of Pakistan,’ at Pakistan Institute of Parliamentary Studies (PIPS) on Monday.
According to a press release, he said that there is continued effort to portray and project politicians as the worst and the most corrupt people of the country.
The politicians are also part of this society, good or bad people could be among them but the military is like a ‘sacred cows’.
Rabbani while shedding light on the internship programme said that this is a special day for the internees, and for parliamentary history. He said that it was especially important for the Senate of Pakistan that a new tradition has been set to engage fresh graduates from various disciplines of eight top universities around Islamabad.
Formal MOUs have been signed with these universities to hire the services of 46 internees including 26 female and 20 male students.
He further informed that the signing of MOU for the same purpose with SZABIST is also under way. These internees have to work and interact closely with the Senate Secretariat and with Senators.
The basic objective is to fill the gap between the Parliament and the masses because the Parliament cannot play an effective role without ownership by the people. We want to make our youth part of the Parliament to know about the Constitution of Pakistan and the long history of struggle, pains, anguish and sacrifices of thousands of political leaders and workers for the cause of democracy.
He maintained that even today people around the country have started talking about the presidential form of government, compromising provincial autonomy, but let it be put on record that there will be havoc if the very foundation of the federation is destabilised.
The Leader of the House Raja Muhammad Zafar ul Haq addressing on the occasion said that the current situation is becoming more and more critical with multifaceted challenges of conventional and non-conventional education, and the initiative of Chairman Raza Rabbani and the Senate of Pakistan is praiseworthy.
