So many loopholes in the story
Despite Zulfiqar Mirza still calling him his brother, Uzair Baloch remains a gang leader who, like other Lyari gangsters, has used his minions to commit crimes like extortion, kidnappings and murder. The other fact about Uzair is that he has been used by big people for the furtherance of their plans. To retain a hold on Lyari, the PPP appointed him the head of the Peoples Amn Committee. Later he was lionised by Mirza in the latter’s tussle with MQM and with PPP leadership. In 2012, PML-N Sindh chief Ghous Ali Shah had invited Uzair to join the party. This raises the question if Uzair is again being used by other powerful people for the realisation of their agenda.
According to Uzair’s daughter, he had been in the agencies’ custody for the last 13 months. The timing of the news about his arrest on Saturday is intriguing. The Sindh government is currently involved in a tussle with the establishment over Rangers’ special powers. PPP leaders have accused Interior Minister Ch Nisar of failing to implement NAP and issuing no condemnation of the terrorist attack on BKU and demanded his resignation.
There is a need to proceed in whatever cases exist against the Lyari gangster strictly in accordance with law. During the inquiry against Vice President Fishermen’s Cooperative Society, leaks were allowed to take place to incriminate not only Uzair Baloch but also top PPP leadership. After the media trial of the MQM through Saulat Miraza’s video, the establishment should have realised that this is a crude and thoroughly unsuccessful way of discrediting political parties. It is not enough to constitute a JTI to investigate the case. It is equally important for the JTI to prepare a solid case that can be established in a normal court of law. If those involved in something else are tried instead for terrorism, as was the case with Dr Asim Husain, their plight is likely to elicit sympathy. This needs to be avoided in this case.
