45 illegal money changers arrested from Peshawar currency market

As many as 45 money changer dealers were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the Hundi (informal money transactions) business during a joint operation conducted by law enforcement agencies in Chowk Yadgar currency market here on Thursday.

Talking to media persons, Superintendent Police (SP) city Imtiaz said the suspects were running currency business without documentation. The Sarafa Bazaar Traders Union president was also among the arrested for doing illegal business, he added.

FIA Assistant Director Qazi Abdul Hameed said that that illegal trading of Afghan currency was going unabated in the city and the joint raid by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and police was aimed at to check it. Faiz market and Warid market inside Chowk Yadgar’s sarafa bazaar were also sealed, he added.

The FIA official said the operation against illegal money changers and Hundi fell under the ambit of the National Action Plan (NAP).

According to sources, the FIA and CTD had received intelligence information that terrorist organizations were receiving funds through money changers carrying out Hundi business in Chowk Yadgar.

Hawala and Hundi have been identified as possible sources of terror financing by officials.
