Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered high-level inquiry into alleged scam of awarding contract for purchasing food items valuing Rs 1.82 billion for prisoners to his favourite company by Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Prisons in defiance of rules and regulations.
According to documents available with Online, contract of billion of rupees is awarded for supply of food items to thousands of prisoners in jails all over Punjab every year. Standard has been set in respect of quality of these food items.
According to the report, the sitting IG Prisons has awarded contract of Rs 1.82 billion for supply of food items for prisoners to his favourite company against rules and regulations of the Punjab government. The process of open tenders has not been pursued.
The audit report has also pointed out this irregularity. The Punjab chief minister had taken notice of this scam and ordered inquiry into the matter but Punjab home secretary has shelved the file of the case instead of holding inquiry.
It is heartening to see public accountability at least of bureaucrats.
