Shakarparian, once the only picnic spot of the Federal Capital established in 1960, has become victim of apathy of Capital Development Authority (CDA).

Even the Islamabad Monument and the National Museum of History and Culture, which were built during the tenure of former President General (Retd) Pervaiz Musharraf, could not attract tourists from the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, and those visiting the Federal capital from other cities because of lack of facilities.

The spot where once films were shot because of its scenic beauty is now deserted. Green belts have almost dried due to tree cutting on the hilly spot in the name of security or development work in the surrounding, depriving Shakarparian of its main attraction. Moreover, all the roads and pavements are in dilapidated condition.

Though a few other recreational spots, including Lakeview Park, hiking tracks on Margalla Hills, have been established, which also contributed towards less number of people visiting the Shakarprian, but according to old visitors, the main reason is lack of interest on the part of the civic authorities to properly maintain the scenic beauty of the spot.

Akram, who has been visiting the spot since the 80’s, said due to its location in the heart of the city, Shakarparian should be the main tourist point, but it had lost its glory because of the CDA’s lack of concern.

Roads and pavements had been broken while grass patches and flower beds were not properly maintained, he added.

Khalid Khan, another visitor, said unlike other picnic spots of the city, Shakarparian lacked swings and other facilities for recreational activities.

He said the spot could still attract visitors, if CDA developed it by providing all the relevant facilities. From the Shakarparian, one could have an eastern view of the capital city, which was once shown in films in late 70’s and 80’s, he added.

The people urged the CDA authorities to carry out development work at Shakarparian, with proper landscaping, planting of seasonal flowers, building and repair of roads and pavements.

It may be added that Shakarparian has a historical importance as foreign dignitaries, including heads of state and government, plant sapling at the hilly point during their official visits to Pakistan.
