The political leaders in KP perhaps do not know how Kalabagh dam will be operated and keep raising the false alarm that Nowshera will get flooded if the dam is built.
Initially the water stored in the dam will be used for sowing the early Kharif crops in April and May and later on for watering these crops. By the end of July, the reservoir level will be down to 700 feet above sea level and will be ready to receive the flood waters in August, it will fill up to its normal level of 915 feet above sea level by the middle of September.
By this time the flood peak will have gone past Nowshera and the KBD reservoir will remain 20 miles short of Nowshera and 25 feet below it.
The full 6.1 maf will then be available for the Rabi and early Kharif crops in all the provinces, including the 8 lakh acres in D I Khan and Bannu districts.
Does it make any sense that we are willfully denying ourselves this God given bounty because of some unfounded apprehensions? I shall be grateful for an editorial on this subject.
