The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday granted bail to Sardar Mastan Singh, former chief of Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC), in an anti-state activities case.

The bench also directed the accused to submit Rs 10 million surety bonds to avail the bail.

The LHC bench headed by Justice Mazhar Iqbal Sidhu granted bail while allowing a post-arrest bail application filed by Mastan Singh.

During the hearing, Mastan’s counsel Anwar Zahid submitted that police had registered a baseless case against his client and others on charges of anti-state activities and spreading religious hatred.

He said that his client was a loyal citizen to the country and enjoyed a good repute. The charges levelled against him were baseless, he said and pleaded the court to grant him bail.

The complainant’s counsel and prosecution, however, opposed the request submitting that a team had been formed to investigate the matter. He said bail should not be granted to the suspect before completion of the investigation.

The bench after hearing the arguments of parties granted bail to Sardar Mastan Singh.

Nankana Police had registered a case against Sardar Mastan Singh and others on an application of Sardar Sham Singh, the sitting Paradhan (chairman) of the PSGPC.
