The Jamaat e Islami and the Pakistan Tehrik e Insaf (PTI) have decided to strengthen the Opposition in order to check the working of the government and to pressurise the rulers for necessary reforms.
The decision was taken at a meeting between the leaders of the two parties at Mansoora on Saturday when a PTI delegation led by former Punjab Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar, called on JI Secretary General Liaquat Baloch and JI Punjab Chief Mian Maqsood Ahmed.
Talking to the media after the meeting, the leaders of the two sides said that electoral reforms were the prime need of the hour. They said that there had been no progress towards electoral reforms despite the recommendations of the parliamentary committee. The Election Commission remained ineffective due to which the masses had lost faith in the democratic system and the elections, they said and added that it was necessary to stop the meddling of the VIPs in the elections.
They said that both PTI and the JI supported the proportionate representation system and were trying to gain the support of other parties to the same.
Liaqat Baloch said that the federal government and the Sindh government had joined hands to protect corruption and terrorism although corruption was eating away the vitals of the national economy.
The two sides discussed the overall situation in the country. PTI’s Parliamentary leader in the Punjab Assembly, Mian Mehmudur Rashid also accompanied the PTI leader in the talks.
The PTI delegation sought JI support for PTI candidate Jehangir Tareen in the by-election in NA-154m, Lodhran. The JI secretary general asked the PTI to approach the JI local leaders including Dr Syed Waseem Akhtar and JI district chief.
