LG by-polls end in Punjab, Sindh districts

Polling for local government by-elections has ended, while vote count is underway in various union councils of 21 districts of Punjab and 15 districts of Sindh.

Polling began at 7:30AM and continued till 5:30PM without any break.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed local government elections in Sanghar and Badin districts scheduled for Thursday.

The decision was taken on the request of the Sindh government due to poor law and order situation in the area.

The districts of Punjab in which by-polls are taking place include Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Okara, Gujrat, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Vihari, Bahawalnagar, Chiniot, Sheikhupura, Sargodha, Sahiwal, Khanewal, Attock, Sialkot, DG Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, Bhakkar and Narowal.

Fates of chairmen and vice chairmen of 16 union councils of Punjab will also be decided today. The re-polling is taking place in Lahore Metropolitan Corporation’s Union Council (UC) 231, as well as four union councils of Faisalabad district council, two of Kasur, one of Okara, one each from Multan municipal and union councils, two of Sheikhupura, one of Khanewal, one of Gujranwala and one union council of Bahawalpur Municipal Corporation.

The re-election took place in one ward each of Punjab’s seven municipal committees including Okara, Kot Radha Kishan, Lala Musa, Kot Chatha, Abdul Hakeem and Haroonabad municipal committees.

In Sindh, re-election was held in areas including Karachi East and West, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Ghotki, Khairpur, Jacobabad, Kashmor Kandh Kot, Qambar Shohda Kot, Shikarpur, Naushahro Feroze, Tandu Allah Yar, Tharparkar, Mirpur Khas, Thatha and Sajawal.

Voters also exercised their right to vote in four town committees of Sindh including Naushahro Feroze’s town committees Hilani and Mithani, Badin’s Tilhar and Hyderabad’s Town Committee Hasri.
