Privatisation would improve PIA services

Much has been said about PIA’s imminent privatisation and it is expected that after satisfying itself, the controlling shares of PIA will be given to the best bidder from the private sector. I think this will be a good development. On the one hand, it will offer a more open environment of growth to PIA. The airline has had a brilliant previous record and it will flourish as before if given the chance. On the other hand, the government will not have to bear the burden of this huge organisation and will not have to keep pumping money into it from its own limited resources.

It is a good thing that Mr Nawaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, has always taken keen interest in the development of PIA and the welfare of its workers. He also agrees that the airline needs to be privatised in its own best interest but has also stressed that the government should not take any steps that would be detrimental to PIA. He has also assured that no PIA employee would lose his job because of privatization. It is commendable that while the PIA management is open to the privatisation process, it would not tolerate any disruption in flights by the protesting employees.

Let us hope that PIA would be run on modern lines in the near future.

  1. If loss is the major reason for privatize then why not privatize the county bcz of losses. Why not ministrie generate revenues, and people of Pakistan still giving taxes for running government and ministries. Remember it’s the government failure to privatize the PIA. Many countries run government airline efficiently.
