Muttahida Qaumi Movement has announced Waseem Akhtar as its nominee for the position of Karachi mayor with Arshad Vohra as his deputy.

Addressing party members and workers via telephone from London, MQM leader Nadeem Nusrat announced the decision on Tuesday evening.

Earlier this month, the MQM saw a landslide victory in local government elections in Karachi, clinching a maximum number of union committees – 135 of 209.

MQM clinched 135 seats in the election for six Karachi districts, trouncing the electoral alliance of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), both of whom bagged 11 and seven seats respectively.

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) emerged the runner up in Karachi, securing 32 seats, according to unofficial results.

In addition to the mayor and deputy mayor, the MQM is also set to grab the posts of chairmen of the district municipal corporations of four of the six districts.

  1. Andhe ko kya chahie ? Do aankhen ! The Land department of KMC is MQM's main interest. This department is a Gold mine besides Water Board. Both these departments have hundreds of MQM workers who are on their pay-roll but work for the party – even as Target Killers like those two of water Board who killed Dr Imran Farooq in London. Wasim Akhtar has a stained reputation as advisor to home department of previous PPP Government. Had issued hundreds of Arms licences to MQM besides transferring hundreds of sophiscated confiscated Arms to 90. Had enrolled hundreds of Workers in Sind/Karachi Police who still are working as 'informers' of 90. All copies of FIRs etc are sent to 90, particularly of MQM criminals. S0, all the best people of Karachi.
