Quake victims hold protest, demands relief cheques

Earthquake’s victims on Saturday demonstrated in the District Headquarter of Shangla, they were protesting over undelivered relief cheques and said that their names had been cut from the list.

According to a press release, accompanied by leaders of major political parties, including ANP, QWP, PTI Haji Sadeed Ur Rehman led protesters who blocked Bisham Swat main road for five hours at Alpuri.

They later marched up to Alpuri main Chowk and staged a demonstration. ANP’s Member district Council and Opposition leader Haji Sadeed Ur Rahman, Gulab Shahpuri, Attaullah Khan, QWP District Chairman Mutawakil Khan advocate, PTI District Council Member Zia Ul Haq and other political leaders addressed the demonstration of Earthquake affectees.

The speakers said that Shangla is one of the worst earthquake hit districts in the province.

They added that the Army had surveyed the area and issued tokens to those that were affected. They reported that the district administration was removing names from the list and not issuing people their cheques.

They demanded immediate transfer of cheques to the victims and provisions for full relief. Later, a delegation of the earthquake-affected people, lead by Rahman and other political elders, met Deputy Commissioner Shangla Saddat Hasan, Assistant Commissioner Taimur Khan Afridi, Army Officers, DSP Rahat Ali Khan.

The Shangla deputy commissioner assured the protester that another survey will be done in areas that were left, and cheques would be provided to all those eligible. The protesters later dispersed peacefully.
