Crackdown on food adulterators in ICT

Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Administration, as part of its measures to check adulteration in food items, has found 448 samples as sub-standard during last five years.

Around 985 samples were drawn during the period to check quality of food items and sent to Nutrition Division of National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad for analysis.

Sources in Ministry of Interior on Friday said in 33 cases of serious nature, FIRs were lodged against and cases were sent to courts while 86 persons were arrested.

They said four cases are under investigation, two accused persons have been convicted and two others acquitted.

The sources said Health Department ICT and Capital Development Authority (CDA) Health Directorate are responsible to check quality of food items; however, Food Department has also powers under Pure Food Ordinance 1960, to check adulteration.

The campaign against adulteration has gained momentum under supervision of Assistant Commissioners and Magistrate accompanies with health, food, livestock officials during inspections. The raids are continuously being conducted and rigorous action is taken against violators of Pure Food Laws.
