Govt committed to support of furniture industry: Commerce Minister

Minister for Commerce Khurram Dastgir Khan on Friday said the government is committed to support the local furniture industry and to benefit workers related to it.

“Cottage industry is the biggest source of employment in rural areas of the country and there is need to promote the skill and craft our workers to provide them more opportunities for earning their livelihood,” Khan said addressing the Furniture Exhibition organized by Furniture Council of Pakistan.

The minister said that it was pleasing that the Furniture Council of Pakistan had organized exhibitions in different cities of the country for promotion of the furniture industry.

“The government is committed to support the industry; to organize and participate in exhibitions in foreign countries in order to introduce and promote the skill and craft of our furniture industry at the international level,” he said.

“We have plans to enhance the public private partnership for providing opportunity to cottage industry at domestic and international level,” he said.

He hailed the efforts of the council and praised their work in setting up different academic institutes in various cities of the country.

The commerce minister said that Lahore College of Fashion and Design also produces skilled manpower for the furniture industry. He hoped that the educated and skilled graduates from the institute would help enhance the capacity of workers and give new ideas for promotion of industry at the international level.
