Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday announced a relief package from the federal government for the earthquake-affected people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

Announcing the package at a news conference in Peshawar on Wednesday, he said the package has been prepared in consultation with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.

He said that the families of persons killed in the earthquake will be given Rs 0.6 million per person. He said that the injured would be given Rs 0.1 million, while those disabled in the devastating quake will be given Rs 0.2 million each.

The prime minister said that Rs 0.2 million would also be given for the construction of completely damaged houses, while Rs 0.1 million each for the partially damaged houses.

Sharif said the process of payment of compensation would start from Monday. He said both the Federal and Provincial governments would share cost of the package.

PM Sharif commended KP Chief Minister Pervez Khattak for personally taking part in relief works.

“We will fully support Chief Minister Pervez Khattak’s efforts,” he said.

When asked by a reporter, the prime minister said that the relief package was as much for FATA as for KP province.

Later, the premier visited Chitral to have an aerial view of the quake-hit areas and to meet with the affected people.
