The story of Indian girl Geeta, who has been stranded in Karachi for the last 13 years, took a dramatic turn on Saturday following reports from India that she has a husband and a son.

According to Indian media reports, some residents in her native village have claimed that Geeta’s husband and her son are waiting for her return.

“Umesh and Geeta had a son, Santosh Mahto, who is around 12 years old now,” The Times of India quoted a villager as saying. Following new revelations, Geeta’s story has become complicated which may jeopardize her early return to India.

Faisal Edhi – son of philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi – said that Geeta has denied that she was married. Geeta, who is hearing and speech impaired, is the guest of Edhi Foundation at Karachi.

“Geeta is desperate to go back to India but, maybe she is misguiding us,” Edhi told a news channel when asked to comment on the latest development. He said that he has been in constant touch with the Indian embassy to facilitate her return.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Geeta recognised her parents when she was provided a picture. “Previously we had shown her pictures of other families but she refused to recognise all of them. But this week she recognised a family as her’s,” Edhi said. He said that her DNA would be conducted in India before her handover to the family. She is likely to travel to India on October 26.
