Education minister wants knowledge-based economy in country

Provincial Minister for Education Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan said on Monday that poverty, ignorance and unemployment could not be eliminated from the region without promoting knowledge-based economies.

Addressing the inaugural session of South Asian Libraries at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), he said that steps like setting up of Lahore Knowledge Park and computer labs in six thousand high schools were aimed at putting the country on the road to progress and prosperity through promotion of education.

HEC Punjab Chairman Dr. Nizam-ud-Din, LUMS University Vice Chancellor Dr Sohail Naqvi, LUMS Library Director Dr Ramazan and a large number of representatives of various libraries were also present on the occasion.

The provincial minister said that Punjab Education Department was running the biggest educational system in the world with more than 52,000 schools, 323,000 teachers and more than 10,000,000 students getting education. He said that Education Department had also launched a comprehensive website for monitoring the system in which data of 52,695 schools could be checked.

Khan said that Lahore Knowledge Park was a unique project of Education Department which spread over 800 acres of land. He said that five international universities would set up their campuses in Knowledge Park. He said that Punjab chief minister had announced to allocate Rs 21 billion for the project.

The minister said that Punjab government would send a summary to the chief minister in light of the recommendations of the participants of the conference regarding service structure of libraries. Later, the education minister visited LUMS library and praised the facilities being provided to the students.
