A contempt of court plea was filed in the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for addressing the United Nations General Assembly in English.

The petition was submitted by Mehmood Akhtar Naqvi.

The plea maintained that the PM has disrespected SC’s order by delivering a speech at the UNGA in English. The SC had passed an order on September 8 regarding the implementation of Urdu within government departments.

The petitioner requested the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Nawaz Sharif. The plea stated that all other world leaders addressed the General Assembly in their national languages.

It is worth mentioning that PM Nawaz had delivered a speech at the UNGA on September 30 in which he raised a voice for the resolution of Kashmir dispute along with other matters.
